Showcase EUROGRID and the EUROGRID concept
Showcase EUROGRID (S-EUROGRID) is a EUMETNET/ECSN optional programme with duration 2007-2008 with SMHI as responsible member. S-EUROGRID's main ambition is to illustrate what the full-scale EUROGRID-concept means, which is intended to be a future European central resource for climate and historical meteorological and environmental data and a key concept within EUMETNET climate undertakings. EUROGRID will include the integration of high-quality climate data based on advanced statistical methods, dynamic processing of historical data (coordinated with related ongoing and forthcoming initiatives such as EURRA), data from Earth Observation (satellite) and other remote sensing techniques as well as the huge amount of ground based joint measurements. EUROGRID will create a product portfolio for users from a variety of sectors, such as climatology, meteorology, environment, hydrology and oceanography, energy, agriculture, forestry and health. Using the existing competence and infrastructure of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and high-quality datasets, EUROGRID will be a European focal point for climate-related activities and initiatives (e.g., climate monitoring/assessment, validation of climate models).
Objectives of Showcase EUROGRID
- To demonstrate how shared gridded climatological and historical meteorological/environmental data from European NMHSs can be used for products and services from modern meteorological services;
- To focus on and prepare for an efficient use of results from planned future very high resolution European re-analysis project as laid out in the proposed EURRA and full EUROGRID concepts;
- To provide evidence on the way forward for a realized full-scale EUROGRID concept as a central European resource for gridded climate, meteorological, hydrological and environmental products/data, in line with overarching European and Global initiatives such as Inspire and GEOSS.
Work programme
- Build a demo portal providing harmonized visualization of single- and multivariate products based on existing high-quality gridded climate datasets for Europe. Two types of datasets will be made available: geographical medium-resolution datasets covering the whole of Europe and high-resolution national/regional datasets for selected sub-areas of Europe. In the beginning, focus is on visualization, harmonized access to data may follow at a later stage of the programme.
- User requirement dialogue (e.g. EEA) concerning products that could be derived from the datasets. Promote the NMHSs as service/data providers with regard to high-quality and high-resolution gridded climate data applicable for a large range of applications.
- Ongoing dialogue with forthcoming initiatives providing new gridded datasets.
